At Ferris, we continue to invest in the future. That is why we are currently developing a fully automated P3 production line: an innovative solution specifically designed to finish structural steel profiles quickly and accurately in accordance with the highest P3 standard.

 

What started as an idea on the shop floor evolved into an ambitious development project. During our daily operations, we encountered a challenge for which no suitable solution was available on the market. Since existing machines did not meet our requirements in terms of quality, speed, and automation, we decided to take the initiative ourselves.

Why P3 Is Essential

Why P3 Is Essential

 

Precise edge rounding is a fundamental element of a durable steel structure. Coatings adhere better to rounded edges than to sharp corners. In industries such as offshore, chemical processing, and maritime applications, this is critical. In these demanding environments, coating systems simply cannot afford to fail, which is why the highest finishing grade—P3—is specified.

 

The P3 Standard Means:

  • Fully rounded edges with a minimum radius of 2 mm
  • Weld spatter is removed, and welds are ground completely smooth
  • An optimal foundation for long-term corrosion protection
  • Applied in highly demanding environments or situations where maintenance is not possible for extended periods

From Concept to Reality

From Concept to Reality

 

Based on our own concept, we collaborated with Crombeen Engineering and machine manufacturer Wöhler to develop a completely new production line. The result is a patented machine specifically designed for the automated finishing of structural steel profiles in accordance with the P3 standard.

 

This marks an important step in the continued professionalisation of our production processes. The machine has been designed entirely in-house, drawing on Ferris’ practical experience and commitment to quality.

The new production line replaces a significant portion of the intensive manual work traditionally required to achieve a P3 finish. By automating this process, we create a more efficient workflow while ensuring consistent and repeatable quality.

Our automated P3 production line is currently in the final stage of development. We expect to deliver the first projects produced fully automatically to the P3 standard shortly thereafter.
